IASTM stands for Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. These are tools the therapist has been trained in utilizing to improve tissue and fascia mobility, diminish adhesions, promote healing and improved blood supply, and decrease edema. The Rock Blades are just an example of tools used for this technique. There are several different types on the market and really depends on the therapist's preference. However, they all serve the same purpose.
IASTM should not be aggressive or overly painful. It should not cause bruising either. It is a technique performed to promote positive signals to the central nervous system to enhance healing. Feel free to discuss with your therapist if IASTM is a technique that is appropriate for you.
